A shot from the past

Victor Carranza. Colombia's 'emerald' king. 1990. I photographed Carranza, while visiting the renowned emerald mine of Muzo, some 80 miles northwest of the capital Bogota. Carranza's legacy has been to build an empire based on the precious stones which are mined in Muzo, and exported all over the world. Colombia, is one of the few countries in the world, where emeralds are found and mined, and the 'green fire' has been the subject of many books and films.
